Eligibility
Blood Donation Eligibility in India: A Simple Guide
The standard criteria Indian blood banks apply, in plain language.
The basics
Age 18–65, weight at least 45–50 kg (varies by blood bank), hemoglobin at least 12.5 g/dL, and generally healthy on donation day. Whole-blood donors wait about 3 months (men) or 4 months (women) between donations.
Temporary deferrals
Recent fever or infection, antibiotics, some vaccinations, pregnancy and the months after childbirth, recent tattoos or piercings (usually 6–12 months), and recent major surgery all defer donation temporarily.
The blood bank decides
Every donation starts with a screening questionnaire and a quick medical check — when in doubt, turn up and let the medical officer decide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I donate if I take daily medication?
Depends on the medicine and condition — declare it during screening; many common medications are acceptable.
Is there an upper age limit?
First-time donors are usually accepted up to 60; repeat donors often up to 65, at the medical officer's discretion.
